For no reason I can see, this place charges $270 an hour for a first visit, $200 for succeeding visits. If a second family member comes in for help, that person is charged $270 for the first hour, too. Meanwhile, psychiatrists with PhDs and counselors with many more years of experience charge $150 an hour, maybe $200. I didn't even ask the fee before showing up for my first appointment, never dreaming this place would be so much higher than everyone else. The counselor we saw is young enough to be my child and appeared to be at a loss as to how to take charge and tackle the issues. Doesn't our insurance cover this? Not when our deductible far exceeds the $540 I have invested so far with no return. A print-out of the counselor's summary will cost an additional $10 or more. I'm lying awake at 2 a.m. wishing I could at least declare this a charitable deduction on our IRS form. For the money, you're better off asking your family doctor for a $4 bottle of Prozac. It's amazingly easy to get Physician's Assistants and family doctors to prescribe these things. I plan to double my dose (same $4 a month at any local pharmacy!) in hopes of achieving apathy, since mental health care in Iowa seems to come in a bottle.
